Assurant Named to 2010 Ward's 50 Top Performing Insurance Companies List

Again this year, Assurant was recognized on the Ward Group’s list of 50 Top Performing Insurance Companies. Ward Group, an operational consulting firm and provider of benchmarking and best practices services to the insurance industry, issued its 20th annual listing of the top performing companies in the property and casualty insurance business on July 13, 2010.

The annual Ward Group analysis of more than 3,000 property-casualty insurance companies and 800 life-health insurance companies in the U.S. identifies the top performers in each segment.

What are the selection criteria?

Assurant was measured in the areas of safety, consistency and performance during a five-year period (2005-2009). Organizations selected must meet the following criteria:

• Safety and Consistency Tests
• Five years of consecutive operating history
• Average surplus and premiums of at least $50 million
• Net income in at least 4 of the last 5 years
• Risk-based capital ratio of at least 100 percent for each of the five years
• Compound annual growth in premiums between -10 percent and +40percent
• Ward Group evaluation of company operations

• Performance Measurements
  • Five-year average Return on Average Equity
  • Five-year average Return on Average Assets
  • Five-year average Return on Total Revenue
  • Five year growth in Net Premiums Written
  • Five year improvement in Leverage Ration
  • Five-year average Combined Ratio

Companies are ranked in each of the above performance measurement areas.
